Despite my love for books, I don’t particularly feel the need to read every genre. It’s all the same in everything actually; be it material things, a theory, a place or a principle and most especially people. You can love someone but there is always that one factor you can’t seem to like but that doesn’t necessarily mean you love the person any less. I am that way with books. I never read Psychological Thrillers. It’s something that doesn’t thrill me, unfortunately. I feel like psychological thrillers are best experienced through moving pictures rather than words. It’s not that I don’t work my imagination when reading but I’m after the cinematography created by people who are infinitesimally more creative and imaginative than me. Hence the reason why I opted to watch Gone Girl instead of reading it. And you know what? I wasn’t disappointed.
Gone girl was such a phenomenal experience for me. It was a feast for my senses. It was intriguing, riveting and captivating. The story is amazing and I commend the author of the book for that, who is Gillian Flynn. The cinematography was perfect, vivid, remarkable and outstanding. I’d list all the wonderful vocabularies I know but I’d save it for the one true person who made this experience much more amazing. She goes by the name of Rosamund Pike.
Rosamund Pike’s character is Amy. Amy is beautiful, smart and independent but she is also a vindictive little bit*h with psychotic tendencies and she completely WON ME OVER. She is the most brilliantly written character ever and Rosamund Pike did her character justice. She’s the protagonist with antagonistic qualities but I couldn’t help but fall in love with her. In fact, I’m not going to talk about the other characters because they are all just so-so, meh, whatever. I probably should’ve named this post, Rosamund Pike-as-Amy-appreciation-post. Anyway, let’s talk more about this loose lady Amy, alright?
So Amy is actually Amazing Amy as known by many because of her mother’s books. Amazing Amy in books had always been the perfect daughter: smart, beautiful and an overachiever. Although real life Amy says that Amazing Amy has always been one step ahead of her, I disagree. Real life Amy and Amazing Amy are both equally brilliant.. just not on the same aspect. Amazing amy is straight laced scholar, diligent daughter and a law-abiding citizen while Real life Amy? She’s a professional murderer, Grade A bit*ch and an expert manipulator, so to speak. Now let’s see how the talented actress, Rosamund Pike, showcased all that.
Rosamund Pike did a marvelous job portraying Amy’s borderline weird personality and for that she was nominated Best Actress at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards. She deserves it, in all honesty. She was the one true character who gave life to that movie. It would have been just another psycho-thriller film but she made it special, she made people notice it. I don’t actually care about the other characters. They all annoyed me. This is the very first time I felt camaraderie for the sort-of-villain in a movie. Usually, I’d want them dead and punished severely but I hoped for the opposite. I actually wished Ben Affleck got jailed for what he did (and also suffered a lot). He’s a major jerk but then again so is Amy. However, I am biased and I never liked cheaters so yeah, I wish Ben Affleck’s character met demise in a different way. I won’t spoil the ending although you probably have a hunch how it goes by what I’ve written so far.
In conclusion, Gone Girl was a brilliant movie. I’d watch it again some time, preferably with friends so we could all gush about the awesomeness that is Rosamund Pike.
